1000 Degrees addresses the mining and quarrying of natural resources as part of the Industrial Revolution. The disfigurement of the environment was caused by demand for rock, stone and cheap coal. The combustion of fossil fuels was central to the expansion of the British Empire and a philosophy that exploited nature for the benefit of man on an industrial scale. 1000 degrees is the level of heat needed to drive combustion and the negatives are burned with a flame of a similar temperature, warping and melting the emulsion. Here the material is transformed, as well as the photographic image contained within it. The resulting form is half image and half object, suspended in a moment of time, on a path to destruction.
